When we think about making wise choices, we usually think about the big ones.
Where we’ll live.
Who we’ll marry.
What career we’ll pursue.
But when I stop and look closely, I realize our lives are rarely shaped by one dramatic moment. More often, they’re shaped by countless ordinary moments that quietly point us in a particular direction.
That’s one of the beautiful truths tucked into Proverbs 1:7. Before Proverbs teaches us about our words, our relationships, our finances, or our character, it reminds us where wisdom begins:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7a, NIV).
If you’ve ever wondered why some people seem to grow in wisdom while others feel stuck repeating the same patterns, Proverbs gives us a hopeful answer. Making wise choices doesn’t begin with knowing exactly what to do in every situation. It begins with learning to fear the Lord.
Why Small Choices Matter More Than We Think
One of the questions I keep coming back to is this:
How do people end up where they end up?
This summer, I spent a few days with my sister and her family outside Madison, Wisconsin. Since the rest of our family lives in southern Illinois, people occasionally ask how she ended up there.
The answer isn’t, “They moved to Wisconsin.”
That’s where they ended up.
The story really began years earlier when she and her husband decided to find a church where they could grow in their faith. They invested in that church family. They served. They built relationships. When the opportunity came to pray about helping plant a church in Wisconsin, they were ready to listen.
Looking back, it’s easy to focus on the destination. But Wisconsin wasn’t one decision. It was years of small, faithful decisions that all pointed in the same direction.
That’s what Proverbs invites us to notice.
The fear of the Lord—a posture of reverence, trust, and obedience—is where wisdom begins. As we continue to seek Him, He leads us one faithful step at a time.
Step By Step Bible Study: What Proverbs 1:7 Teaches About Making Wise Choices
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7a, NIV).
The Hebrew word for fear speaks of moral reverence. It’s an awe-filled respect for God that moves beyond emotion into obedience.
The Topical Lexicon says it is:
- It is a heart struck by God’s glory.
- A mind that acknowledges His authority.
- A life that aligns with His ways.
Notice that Proverbs doesn’t begin by telling us what decisions to make. It begins by telling us whom to trust.
Wisdom grows as we intentionally seek and follow God.
Why Don’t Small Choices Feel Very Important?
When my oldest son, Alex, was in junior high, he annually attended a summer piano camp that required weeks of preparation.
One year, just two weeks before camp, I discovered he hadn’t really been practicing.
Now, no single skipped practice seemed like a big deal. But eventually, those small choices caught up with him. Instead of refining a piece he already knew, he was trying to learn it under pressure.
Thankfully, he made it through piano camp and learned an important lesson: small choices often don’t feel significant because, by themselves, they usually aren’t.
Reading your Bible today may not feel life-changing.
Going to church this weekend may not immediately solve your struggle.
Choosing worship music on your drive home may not seem like a defining moment.
But those choices don’t exist in isolation. Over time, they become a path. And every path leads somewhere.
Can We Really Change the Direction of Our Lives?
When I think about this question, I think about Moses. In Exodus 3, he was filled with objections. He doubted himself, questioned whether people would listen, and begged God to send someone else.
By Exodus 33, something had changed. When God prepared to lead His people again, Moses’ greatest concern wasn’t his own ability.
It was God’s presence.
“If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here” (Exodus 33:15, NIV).
Years of imperfect obedience had transformed him.
He wasn’t simply walking a different path. He had become a different man. That’s the work God does in every believer who continues to seek Him.
We don’t change simply by trying harder. As we intentionally seek and follow God, He changes both the path we’re walking and the people we’re becoming.
Something to Consider
If someone looked at your life five years from now, what small choices would they point to as the ones that quietly shaped your direction?
Key Takeaway
The direction of your life is rarely determined by one dramatic decision. More often, it’s shaped by the cumulative grace of ordinary obedience—one faithful choice after another as you learn to fear the Lord and follow His leading.
